Abstract: This paper describes in detail the basic functions, composition and main equipment of the radiation controlled area access (RCA) in pressurized water reactor nuclear power plants. It comprehensively compares and analyses the RCA's layout design scheme and staff access process between the CPR1000 plant and AP1000 plant. Based on our country's nuclear plant's operation experiences, this paper provides the RCA's design principles from aspects of general function design, layout design and equipment requirements. The environmental design requirements including health, ventilation and power supply are also given. The provided design principles can instruct the RCA design of the pressurized water reactor nuclear power plants.
